PURPOSE
The purpose
of the Local Boards of Health Leadership Development Committee is to provide
opportunities to facilitate the professional development of local boards of
health.
Opportunities currently under development include: regional technical
assistance workshops on selected public health issues; development of a new
member Board of Health Orientation; regular submission of public health
related articles to City and County government association publications such
as WSAC's Courthouse Journal.
RELATIONSHIP TO WSALPHO BYLAWS
Article III
of the WSALPHO Bylaws states: “The mission of public health is to improve
health status through the promotion of health and the prevention of and
protection from injury and disease. To support this mission, the purpose of
the WSALPHO is to encourage improvement in the quality, capacity, and
leadership of health department/districts in order to provide a more
effective, efficient and consistent public health infrastructure throughout
the state. To support this vision, the WSALPHO shall: A. Assume an active
role in public health policy, including legislation, ordinances and
regulations pertaining to core public health functions at the local, state,
and when appropriate, federal levels….F. Promote the highest degree of skill,
efficiency and professional competence to all professional disciplines
contributing to the health of the public through a mutual exchange of
knowledge, experience, and information….”
Local Board
of Health Professional Development Opportunities as cited above contributes
to this purpose by providing a forum for education and networking among local
board of health members distinct from their other government responsibilities
as elected officials. The Local Boards of Health Development Committee will
consult with and engage local board of health members so that all
professional development opportunities are designed from their perspective in
order to meet their needs. WSALPHO members provide staffing support and input
into the Local Boards of Health Development Committee as well.
The ability
to promote good public health policy in our communities depends upon a local
board of health that understands public health and understands their
responsibilities as board of health members.
On-going
education for Local Board of Health Members also supports the Workforce
Development priority expressed in the Public Health Improvement Plan. Local
Board of Health members are public health policy makers and as such are an
integral part of the local government public health workforce.
