State Association of Local Public Health Officials Lois Smith has recently joined the Washington State Association of Counties' team as the Managing Director for the Washington State Association of Local Public Health Officials (WSALPHO), an affiliate organization of the association. Lois comes to our organization with extensive experience in government affairs, strategic planning and project / resource management. She has a solid background in program development, operations management and resource development in both non-/for-profit environments. Lois has spent the majority of her career working on healthcare policy and health-related issues in organizations dedicated to improving the lives of adults, families and children. Twelve years of her career was with the AARP, directing national, regional and state efforts for the Association’s legislative advocacy, community service and public education initiatives. She has served as a National Coordinator and Senior Legislative Representative in WA DC where she was responsible for managing operations of the E-Advocacy, Political Intelligence and Advocacy Training Teams, and leading national efforts with field / state offices in the development and implementation of State Strategic Planning and Integrated Campaign development and implementation. Prior to her work at the national level, Lois was a State Director and multi-state Legislative Rep for AK, MT, NV, OR and WA. During her tenure, Lois has held various leadership roles on national membership, health and consumer issue teams and has conducted numerous public speaking, issue and skill building workshops for organizations including: Independent Sector, NALC, NRTA and George Washington University. Lois has served as a legislative liaison and consultant to elected and appointed officials, as well as various agencies and associations including: the Commission on Aging, DSHS, Aging & Adult Services and the Bar Association. With her wealth of experience in government affairs and non-profit operations and management. Lois expects to fully leverage her background and skills in her new role as WSALPHO's Managing Director. Lois' mantra is to listen, learn and leverage the leadership and expertise of our members and describes herself as a visionary with a plan. "I have the ability to see the big picture while simultaneously working to build a dynamic and strategic world-class operation that positions WSALPHO as the collective voice for local health jurisdictions," said Smith. "I am committed to ensuring our work is integrated and team-centric, where staff, members and partners are empowered and engaged in improving the quality of life for Washingtonians through proactive public health outreach, education and collaboration in the state and in their communities." Lois and her family relocated back to Washington State last month after an 11-year hiatus. They are thoroughly enjoying their return back to the Pacific Northwest ...and as Lois says, "we've come back home." |
