LEGISLATIVE ADVOCACY
Promoting a County Agenda
WSAC serves as a forum to build a statewide county legislative
package. The fact that WSAC represents all counties is key to building
the coalitions needed to pass legislation.
Keeping Counties Informed
WSAC monitors bills and keeps members up-to-date on legislative
activities with the Courthouse Journal, budget summaries, Mandate Watch
lists, Action Alerts and other communiqués.Preventing Bad Legislation
More than half of the thousands of bills introduced in the State
Legislature each year affect county government operations. WSAC’s work
to discourage bad legislation (especially new duties with no funding) is
just as important as its work to pass good legislation.
Participating as a member of the Tri-Association
WSAC has joined with Washington Association of County Officials (WACO)
and Association of Washington Cities (AWC) to promote a joint agenda. In
2003, our united front was very successful in a tough legislative
session. It produced $5 million for low revenue counties, two years of
funding for local public health, new revenue powers for counties and the
preservation of the County Road Administration Board (CRAB).Serving as State, Federal and Congressional Liaison
WSAC serves as liaison to state and federal agencies, and is the
coordination point for funding, rule making, program design and
implementation and other issues. WSAC also works closely with National
Association of Counties (NACo) in presenting the county viewpoint to
Congress and the White House. |
