Mason County Courthouse
"Mason County's lovely sandstone court house
was built in 1929 in Shelton, WA by Joseph H. Wohleb
of Olympia. The two story structure also has a full
basement devoted to office space. Mason County was
first organized in 1854, and until 1864 was known
as Sawamish County when the name was changed to
Mason in honor of C. W. Mason, who was secretary
to the first Territorial Governor and often assumed
the duties of acting governor. The county seat was
at Oakland, two miles northeast of Shelton on Hammersley
Inlet, but in 1888 the courthouse location was changed
to Shelton. A two-story white frame building served
as courthouse, until an addition was built in 1904
and then present building was erected 25 years later."
