Chelan County Courthouse
Chelan County Courthouse

Chelan County was formed from parts of Kittitas and Okanogan counties in 1899, ten years after Washington was made a state.  The name "Chelan" is a Native American word referring to "waters," which in this instance probably referred to Lake Chelan.  Upon the county's creation, Wenatchee became its county seat and remains so today.

The first courthouse was a three-story brick hotel, which was used by the county as the courthouse until 1924, when the new one was constructed.  The old courthouse reverted back to a hotel until it was remodeled.  Portions of it are recognizable today.

The present courthouse was constructed in 1924.  The total cost of the building, including furniture, was approximately $400,000.

The Chelan County Courthouse is a four-story brick building sitting on a base of granite brought from Index, Washington.  The building is trimmed with terra cotta designs, and the corridors are laid with Alaskan marble.  The building design has been described by county officials as Palladian Beaux Arts.
