Ferry County Courthouse
"Ferry County Courthouse in Republic was built
in 1936 as a WPA project on site of the former frame
courthouse building which was destroyed by fire
the early part of 1935. Fortunately records in the
vaults were saved and also some furniture. County
officers conducted their business in the city hall
for nearly two years while the present building
was under construction. Ferry County was organized
in 1899, and was orginally a part of Stevens County.
It was named after Elisha P. Perry, the first governor
of the state. At the time, the majority of the population
resided in Republic. The area around the Republic
was called "Celopus" by the Indians, meaning
high moutains. The Knob Hill Gold Mine in Ferry
County has been known as the largest mine in the
U.S and produced a considerable amount of silver.
More than 80% of the land in the county is government
owned, with most of it being in the Colville National
Forest or Colville Indian Reservation."
